Services

High Tech with a Light Touch

We are extremely proud to offer you and your family a wide variety of the newest and most effective restorative and preventative dental services. Our office has most of the highest technological innovations offered in dentistry.  Each one is designed to extend the life of your teeth and your total dental health, or to make your dental treatment easier and more comfortable. We think that the belief that tooth loss is inevitable as we age no longer applies.

Dental techniques, materials and protocols advance quickly. To ensure you're getting the latest in care, Dr. Century takes almost 10 times the amount of advanced skills certifications that the State of Illinois requires. Our hygienists take more ongoing education than the majority of dentists. You'll find this to be just one aspect of the fiercely protective nature of our care for you.

Dr. Century prides herself on providing her patients with the very latest techniques offered by modern dentistry, and still doing it in a manner that will make you enjoy your visit, or even have fun.

Laser Periodontal Treatment

If you have been told you have moderate to severe gum (periodontal) disease...and especially if you have been referred to a specialist for surgery....we would like to encourage you to consider the more effective, more comfortable laser alternative. If you've been told that you're likely going to be losing teeth due to gum disease, please see us for a second opinion.

This proven FDA approved procedure is shown to be not only to more effective compared to traditional surgery, it also greatly reduces the pain and recovery time. Most people go to work the same day.

Fewer than 500 dentists in the entire country have qualified for certification in this technique.  Dr. Century was the first dentist in Lake County to be fully trained and licensed to perform Laser Periodontal Therapy using LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) and is now one of the most experienced in the world.  In fact, last February she was invited to moderate the Fifth Annual Clinician's Meeting of the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, the educating body for this technique.

Gum disease has been shown to be contagious between spouses so by getting treatment, you're not only taking care of yourself, you're also protecting your loved one.  Call us to schedule a consultation to see if you're a candidate for this procedure.

Cerec Single Visit Crowns

We are happy to have added the Cerec machine to our office.  This equipment uses CAD/CAM technology to provide you with your crown in one visit.  It also allows Dr. Century to repair partly broken down teeth with a material much stronger than regular filling materials, while preserving more of your healthy tooth than with a regular crown.

After the tooth is prepared, whether for a full crown or a more conservative option, an optical image is taken with an infrared camera.  No more "goop" in your mouth.  Next Dr. Century uses the Cerec computer to design your restoration.  Within a few minutes the design data is sent to a separate milling machine in the office.  A strong ceramic block is placed in the milling machine and about 20-30 minutes later your tooth-colored restoration is ready to be bonded into place.

Your tooth is restored with no "temporary crown" and no return visit needed.

New Technique Makes Injections Pain Free

We know that some patients get more nervous than others at the mere sight of a needle and syringe. That's where our new Wand system come in - a small lightweight handpiece that resembles a pen. The computer controlled system allows for an even-flow delivery of anesthetic in a very comfortable, non-threatening manner. It eliminates the "bee sting" effect - the painful consequence from a surge of fluid into a confined tissue area. Even more, certain injections made possible with the Wand minimize the unnecessary numbness of the tongue, cheek, and face. Imagine leaving the dentist's office without a "fat lip!"  Our patients have been incredibly enthusiastic about this new addition.

Straight Teeth in Six Short Months

Powerprox Six Month BracesTM  is a revolutionary new technology that will give you a beautiful smile, quickly and comfortably. Whether your teeth have gaps, or are crowded and overlapped, most cases can be completed within six months or less, and in just seven to ten short appointments.  Since the main focus of treatment is the anterior esthetics of the front teeth and not changing the back bite, we like to compare the Powerprox technique to porcelain veneers, bonding and other cosmetic dentistry procedures. Instead of preparing the teeth and bonding porcelain veneers to them, the teeth are moved orthodontically to their most beautiful position.  Powerprox Six Month Braces uses new, low-force materials so your teeth can be moved gently and safely with less discomfort than is often seen with traditional braces. And because the treatment time is shorter, this technique is less expensive than standard comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

Six month braces is actually a combination of time tested orthodontic techniques that have been put together in a new and exciting way. Some of the techniques have been used for over 60 years and have been well documented in the orthodontic literature. These techniques were put together in the 1980’s and the technologies to implement them have finally been made available. A key ingredient of the Six Month Braces procedure is the use of  high-tech arch wires. These wires exert a light continuous force to gently move the teeth to the desired position.

The most common chief complaint of patients seeking orthodontic treatment is crowding. Crowded cases are treated very well with Six Month Braces. So how do we gain space to fit all the teeth into the arch? Most crowded cases have large teeth in a small jaw, or arch. In many cases simply rounding out and developing the constricted arch will give you enough room to align the crowded teeth.

Do You Suffer from Tension or Migraine Headaches?

We are happy to offer the NTI system to our patients. This is the first FDA approved non-drug prevention of migraines. The NTI is a small appliance worn over your front teeth at night (and sometimes during the day at the beginning of treatment). We have had wonderful success in relieving patient's chronic and acute pain. Because this is not a drug, there are no side effects. Since it has been approved by the FDA, coverage can be available through your medical insurance. If you suffer from chronic pain, be sure to ask us about the NTI - we have had our patients call it nothing short of miraculous.

Laser Fillings - the Future is Already Here

What if your child could have their next filling done without a shot, without a drill?  It's possible now.  You won't miss the needle and you won't miss the numb lip afterwards when you have your teeth fixed with the VersaWave laser.  While not all fillings can be done this way, many can, especially on our younger patients.  We are happy to provide this service as a way of making your visit more comfortable.

Microscopes in Dentistry

Use of an operating microscope has become standard of care for endodontists (root canal specialists), but less than 1% of general dentists use one.  Using a dental microscope, Dr. Century can be more accurate in your treatment, especially when using a laser.  She can do periodontal (gum) surgery using much smaller instruments and stitches finer than a human hair - both of which result in much less post-operative discomfort for you.  Use of the microscope is also incredibly valuable in detecting problems at an earlier stage.

Advanced Oral Cancer Screening

We are proud to offer the latest advance in early detection of oral cancer.  The Velscope uses a safe blue light shined on the surfaces of your mouth.  Looking through the special lens, Dr. Century can see abnormal areas not visible to the naked eye. We feel this is an absolutely critical part of any periodical oral exam and we do not charge extra for it.

Why don't we charge extra for this?

  • Oral cancer kills one person every hour of every day in North America
  • Oral cancer has three times as many victims as cervical cancer
  • You are at an increased risk of developing oral cancer if you smoke, drink alcohol, and/or are over 40
  • Even younger adults are being struck from the sexually-transmitted human papilloma virus (HPV).
  • Nearly half of oral cancer patients, when it's commonly detected, are expected to die within 5 years of diagnosis, however it's 80 to 90% survivable if diagnosed early
  • Unfortunately, only 35% of oral cancer cases are diagnosed in the early stages
  • Fortunately, VELscope can help your us not only detect oral cancer, but can also allow us to find cells that, if left untreated, can lead to cancer.

  • Digital X-rays Decrease Radiation

We have used digital x-rays in our office since 2002.  Using digital technology allows us to blow up the x-ray to the size of a computer screen making it much easier to use for diagnosis.  And the best part is, our current system uses one-sixth of the radiation we previously used!

Laser Finds Cavities When They are Smaller

The sooner we find a cavity, the easier it is to fix. The cavities found on the biting surfaces of teeth have always been tricky to find, and it's more difficult now. Ironically, while fluoridation means fewer cavities overall, it has hardened tooth enamel to the point that traditional techniques are no longer effective for early detection.

These are grooves in your teeth are often narrower than a toothbrush bristle (you can't really brush there) and also narrower than the dental instruments traditionally used to check for cavities.  The DIAGNOdent laser beam, however, allows us to easily inspect these areas photonically. An early diagnosis means less tooth removed and less cost to you.

This is another service we include at no additional charge to you.
