What Is a Root Canal?
Your teeth are made up of several parts. The center consists of a gel-like substance and is known as the pulp. When the pulp of a tooth becomes inflamed, it can lead to debilitating pain and infection. A root canal procedure involves removing the affected pulp so your tooth can begin the healing process. After your tooth successfully recovers, it can function exactly as it did before the infection. If your dentist advises you to get a root canal, they will thoroughly explain their reasoning so you can make an informed decision.
What to Expect at Your Root Canal Appointment
At Lakeside Dental, we perform a comprehensive exam to determine if root canal treatment is necessary. Our dentists partners with local oral surgeons to help provide the best service possible. If you have any questions during your procedure, Dr. Century or Dr. Singla will be more than happy to walk you through the process.
- Before attempting any part of your root canal, your oral surgeon will carefully apply an anesthetic to the affected area and will ensure that you are totally numb before moving on to the next step in the process. If you’re still experiencing any sensation, they will do another round of anesthetic so your root canal will be as painless as possible.
- After numbing your tooth and gums, your oral surgeon will place a dental dam, or protective sheet, to isolate the area from the rest of your mouth.
- Your oral surgeon will carefully make a tiny incision on the top section of your tooth to remove the infected pulp. After the affected area is removed, we will sculpt the interior of your tooth to prep it for filling.
- Your oral surgeon will fill the now-empty center of your tooth with a rubber-like material and seal the tooth.
- You and your surgeon will collaborate to create a post-op care routine that will ensure the longevity of your root canal.
Prevent Root Canals
While root canals can be necessary, there are steps you can take to avoid needing one in the first place. A comprehensive personal hygiene routine is the first line of defense against decay and infection. Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day with a dentist-approved toothbrush and toothpaste. The bristles of your toothbrush should be neither too hard nor too soft, but your dentist can provide you with product recommendations if you’re unsure of the best options. Flossing at least once a day is also recommended, although after every meal is ideal. Complete your oral health routine with professional dental cleanings twice a year.
